3.5.2.4 Future Tense


The form of future tense describes actions and states that will happen in future.

There are two ways of forming the future tense:


  • In imperfective verbs (see Aspect), the future tense is made up of the form of the verb to be and the infinitive of the particular verb, e.g.: budu studovat (I will study), budeš platit (you will pay), budou pracovat (they will work), budete plakat (you will cry).

  • The future tense of být is:

    1. (já) budu 1. (my) budeme
    2. (ty) budeš 2. (vy) budete
    3. (on, ona, ono) bude 3. (oni) budou

  • Perfective verbs form present and past tenses in the same way as imperfective verbs. However, the future with budu is only formed from imperfectives. The future of perfective verbs is expressed by their present forms, e.g.:
